Our goal is successful commercialization of life science innovations leading to industry growth, jobs, and economic impact for the Province of BC. The amount of funding provided by the I² Fund ranges from $250,000 to $1,750,000 per company.
Typically, repayment of the loan principal will commence four years after disbursement and is spread over a two year schedule. The funding is interest-free during the first four years. However, Genome BC collects a low, single-digit royalty payment if your company generates significant revenue. The Royalty obligation is capped and can be significantly reduced and even terminated early if the company elects to make accelerated repayments of the principal and/or lump sum royalty payments.
The Funding Process
We do want applicants to provide a business plan and a presentation highlighting:
- The team, technology/service and intellectual property;
- The market opportunity, value proposition and the commercialization plan;
- The financial requirements, prospective co-funders and risks involved.
If the company has a promising life science business opportunity, dedicated management and independent Board of Directors, we will launch an in-depth due diligence process to further explore the likelihood of commercialization.
If significant gaps are identified during the due diligence process, funds will not be advanced but we will endeavour to point the company toward resources and partners that are able to help remedy the deficiencies.
We will have the top promising companies present their business plan to our Advisory Council (insert link to the listing of its members). The Council makes recommendations to Genome BC about the opportunities and risks of potential venture investments.
Should the Advisory Council provide a favourable response for the company, the company’s investment will be presented to Genome BC’s Board of Directors who will make the ultimate investment decision. Board meetings and investment decisions are made quarterly.
